"It's simple. He's a jerk." Sarah said, her t's and M's sounding awkward due to her plugged up nose. The bleeding had stopped, but she didnt want to take any chances, for the time being, she had shoved a bunch of tissues into her nostrils.
"You're not going out in public like that are you?" natalie asked.
"why, do you not want to be seen with me?" sarah snapped. Natalie looked hurt.
"No, it's becasue Brody is waiting outside the locker room." She half whispered, as if her voice would be heard from behind the heavy metal door.
"GREAT." Sarah mumbled and pulled the tissues out carefully. She cleaned the blood from her lip and chin, pulled her hair down, and forced natalie out the door.
"Distract him." She whispered as she slammed the metal door shut. With luck, natalie could make him feel awkward and he would end up going to the parking lot instead of the assembly. She smoothed out her shirt, and took a deep breath, ready to run into the auditorium if need be. She pushed the door open, and darted out amongst the crowd of seniors and juniors, who towered over her, she was a mere five foot four. The door to the gym was open and free of any unwelcome visitors. She stepped out the door and into the growing sunlight. Her upperclassmen coverage dispersed and she beelined right to the auditorium. She silently praised natalie in her head. She took a seat right by the door for an easy exit in the auditorium and stared blankley at the stage. Natalie came running over to her.
"Wow." She said, her face flushed and a dazed expression on her face. Sarah payed no attention to natalies detail of her conversation with Brody. For a week afterwards Brody would always apologize to her when ever he passed bye, but it eventually turned into a joke for him and his friends. Then things calmed down and the regular routine of silence begain once more. That is untill it came time for winter break.
It was a miserable looking friday afternoon, school had just let out and sarah was in a hurry to get to the parkinglot where the busses waited. The teachers were espeically cruel at this time of the yearh, heaping on projects, papers and presentations. Her back pack was full, as were her arms.
"Only eight more months!" Natalie whispered, and both girls giggled before running to their attendance spot on the rubber gym floor. It was only eight more months untill they were finished with p.e. once and for all. All the freshmen and sophomores were lined up, waiting for the teacher to come and instruct them to do some mindless warm up activity before the public humilation of team sports began. Most of the juniors were in attendance line as well, except for a small group of boys. They came out of the boys locker room, making quite a sceen, brody, the tall blonde had pulled the pants of his friend, an equally tall brunnete, down to his ankles and was hiding behind some terrified freshmen. Had it been any other student to pull something like that, they would be given detention. But seing as it was brody, the highschool god of sports, the teacher just rolled his eyes and continued to take attendance. It was people like him that brought out the worst of her. Natalie groaned beside her, and grabbed her arm.
"Isn't he amazing?" she asked, her voice full of awe. The girl rolled her eyes and gave a sarcastic response. She looked at him closely. He was rather attractive. His hair was almoast white blonde, and was about 4 inches long, but covered his eyes in the front. He had a toned muscular body, but he was incredibly pail. He looked like he was about 6'4" but she wasn't sure. She felt very ugly sitting in a room full of muscualr skinny girls with tight clothes that showed off their bodys, where she sat in frumpy mom clothes. The teacher blew his whistle and announced that, since today there was a manditory assembly wich would cut into first period, they would be playing dodgeball. A quiet groan spred through out the underclassmen section, where as the upperclassmen let out laughs of joy.
"C'mon sarah, lets go hide in the back." Natalie whispered and pulled the girl off the floor. Sarah nodded. The likely hood of all the underclassmen being picked off before class was over was a slim one. The class was divided into two, upperclassmen stood on the left, underclassmen to the right. Sarah grumbled quietly how P.E. teachers were miserable little people who only tormented studends because their own lives sucked, which made her and natalie burst into a fit if laughter. Unfortunatley the upperclassmen took that as a sighn of weakness and targeted them.
"Way to go sarah, you blew our cover!" natalie said with fake anger. Sarah gulped and ducked behind a freshman, who got nailed in the face by the foul smelling rubber dodgeballs. The freshman scampered to the side of the gym, where now more than 3/4ths of the underclassmen stood. It was a massacre, only about two of the upperclassmen were out. Sarah peeked out from behind her newest sheild, her friend bobby who was just as cowardly as her, only to check the time. If only she hadn't done that. Suddenly all she could see was red, and smell the awful rubber ball. Then pain erupted, starting from her nose and leaching out to the rest of her face. She slumped to the ground, her hand shot to her nose. There was blood. IF looks could Kill, brody would have dropped to the ground. He laughed at first, untill he saw that he had caused Sarah the misery of a bloody nose. The teacher blew his whistle.
"time's up. Go dress up and report to the auditorium."
Brody jogged over to sarah, nataile and bobby. Natalie turned bright pink at his arrival, boby shrank away and sarah glared.
"Sorry about that! are you okay?" he asked his voice containing little concern.
"Does it LOOK like i'm okay?" She said, her nose still dripping with blood. Brody cringed.
"i guess not. Look, let me take you down to the nurse's it's the least i can do." He said, extending out his arm. Natalie let out a little whimper of jelosy, that only sarah could hear.
"Drop dead." She grumbled and stormed off to the locker room.
It's strange how fragile life is. One moment the world could be in perfect balance, youu might be ligher than air, living a natural high from the wonderful life you are given. Then in the blink of an eye everything can change. Your once perfect world has been shattered into a million pieces with no chance of putting the pieces back together the way they once were. You struggle to pick them up, they slip through your fingers, leaving you to piece it back together all on your own. You find yourslef with something resembling the life you once knew, but deep within your heart you know it will never be as sweet and wonderful as the one you had grown accustomed to. Despair rises deep within your heart. Each day it slowly consumes you. It flows through you like a poison, affecting you and those arround you. You wish it could all just end, failing to see the light at the end of the tunnel, the possibility for happiness to exist once more. Your personality has changed and you realise the saying is true. YOu don't appreciate what you have untill it is taken from you. Not untill something truly awful happens does one truly apprecieate life and gain a new perspective on things.
The shrill howl of ambulance sirens pierced the silence of night. It cut through the dark like a knife. Hearing them had become a regular event these days, people rarely took notice of them any more. So coincidentally it makes perfect sence that when I found out the ambulance had something to do with my loved ones, it came even more of a shock to me than it should. It is a situation like this, that you always hear of happening to someone else. But to some one else, you are some one else. And i realised that life comes and goes in the blink of an eye. it is the most precious gift we can ever be given and it should never be taken lightly. As i stood in the street, watching him being lifted onto the strecher, i knew my life was never going to be the same. His eyes had lost the lustrous glint they once had, the indicator that he was so full of life. It was gone. I stood in a daze, the paremedics helped me onto the ambulance and we were wisked away to the nearest hospital. I stared at his body in a mix of hurt and shock. How could he still be doing that to himself? He had sworn to me that it would end. My emotions got the better of me, betrayal and anger flooded my conciousness. I could feel the hot tears stream down my face. The paramedic by my side mistook my tears of hurt as those of fear. He put his arm across my shoulder and spoke of Brody healing, and getting help, and being allright. I shook my head, my voice broke as i wailed, he had broken his promise. My life was on its way to ending.
I met Brody as a sophomore in highschool. He was a junior. we met in the most unconventional of ways.
A teenage girl, 16 years at the most, stepped off the crowded yellow schoolbus and headed towards the main building of her highschool. After three weeks into october she had finnaly gotten the swing of things. A squeel of rubber against the wet pavement caught her attention. she turned her attention to the upperclassmen parkinglot where she could see a tall blonde boy laughing from his beater car. She scoweld, knowing that he was too far away to see her face. First period P.E.
"Howcome you gasp every time you see me? It kinda' hurts 'ya know?"
